Vienna. From week to week, Austria falls further behind the EU average in the vaccination rate. For the past week, the country has stagnated at a rate of about 58 percent fully vaccinated.
And has thus clearly fallen below even the government’s worst-case scenarios. Burgenland (66.4 percent) and Lower Austria (61.4) are the best of all the provinces, but have also failed to reach the goal of vaccinating 70 percent of the population before school starts.
However, the low vaccination rate puts the unvaccinated – including children, for example – at greater risk again, especially vulnerable groups who do not build up such strong immunity even after vaccination. Therefore, booster vaccinations for the elderly has started already. High-risk groups will also receive a new vaccination starting six months after the second sting. Lower Austria has already started vaccinations in nursing homes and hospitals on Wednesday. Vienna vaccinated yesterday in a nursing home and now also wants to release vaccinations for health care workers. The other provinces are vaccinating only in nursing homes for now.
These booster vaccinations – Israel vaccinates every six months after the second sting and the U.S. is also now recommending it more strongly – should at least slow down recent tragedies and clusters in nursing homes and hospitals. However, the government is also still struggling with concepts to increase the far too low general vaccination rate after all. In the middle of the fourth wave.
